CHARACTER'S OF GTA VICE CITY
A year after Grand Theft Auto III tore up the gaming world, Rockstar Games topped it with the next title in the franchise, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Unlike its predecessor, Vice City features a full-fledged protagonist in "The Harwood Butcher" Tommy Vercetti, who has just finished spending fifteen years in jail for killing eleven people during a job to assassinate one man in the neighborhood of Harwood. The Forelli mob family knows Tommy will cause more trouble if they allow him to roam Liberty City unchecked, so they send him down to Florida's Vice City to keep him out of the way and to help the family get into the new "businesses" growing there.

Tommy Vercetti's background is one of the character's best aspects, but casual players might not know how much effort went into creating one of the most recognizable characters in the series. Players are introduced to one of the biggest facets of Vercetti's personality as he thwarts the assassination attempt and earned himself a prison sentence in Liberty City for eleven counts of murder, one for every mafia member he killed and earned a nickname that would follow him to Vice City in 1986: The Harwood Butcher. The parallels Tommy Vercetti has with Scarface's Tony Montana are glaring. The two share a similar setting in which they rise to poweer. The Malibu Club in Vice City is based on the Babylon Club; Vercetti's estate takes inspiration from Tony's mansion; and other scenes from the film are replicated in the game, such as the apartment in Miami in which a character from the film is attacked with a chainsaw is modeled in Vice City. When looking at all the accomplishments of Tommy Vercetti through the story of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and beyond, it might come as a surprise that Vercetti is, at least chronologically, in the middle of his life. Born in 1951, Vercetti is thirty-five years old during his rise to kingpin in the fictional Miami-inspired Vice City. Becoming a mafia associate, avoiding assassination attempts, and leading his own crime family before forty years old is no easy task. Tommy Vercetti has a long list of accomplishments and a criminal record that's even longer. It's no surprise that he quickly became the favorite character in many gamers' minds.

Sonny Forelli
Lance Vance appears as a Major Character in GTA Vice City. Lance is one of the leaders of the Vance Crime Family and a drug dealer. Lance Vance is Tommy Vercetti's sidekick of sorts, and brother of Victor Vance, the cocaine dealer in the opening cinematic of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. In this scene, Lance can be seen in the pilot's seat of the helicopter that takes off in the background when Victor is killed. Lance also appears at a younger age in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. Lance and Tommy form an alliance after a major drug deal goes wrong, with them both wanting to seek out revenge on those that wronged them. Due to their budding friendship, Tommy will come to the rescue when Lance acts impulsively and gets himself into some dangerous situations.

Juan Garcia Cortez
Colonel Juan Garcia Cortez is a colonel from an unknown war. He and Tommy meets at a party on his yacht. Colonel Cortez discvers that his main henchman, Gonzalez, has given the information to someone (revealing in Vice City Stories to be Ricardo Diaz, as Gonzalez was forced by Diaz to reveal all the information about the Colonel's drug dealing). Cortez then tells Tommy to kill him using a chainsaw. Colonel Cortez seems to have a dislike for the French Secret Service when he steals chips containing information on weapons. The French secret Service invade the area Cortez was docked with his yacht. Tommy recognises Cortez as an honourable man and helps him escape. He, Cotez's men and Cortez himself fend the boat from the French.
